I’ve known for a while that the SRWC members are a special group of women, but participating in the Art Fair showed me just how much “heart” we have amongst us. I was blown away by Sandy Lassen, the Art Fair Chair, and Kathleen Meyer, her assistant and next year’s Chair, along with the entire committee that put together this fabulous event. I was blown away even before I showed up for my first volunteer shift. It was then that another gust of amazement hit when I saw all the women (and some men) checking into the volunteer center. All in good spirits, laughing, talking, and eager to take on their duties. Several times I heard people say something like, “I’m early; what can I do to help?”
What can I do to help? What a wonderful question. We used to do house cleanup and travel prep with our kids instructing them, “Today is a ‘What can I do to help?’ kind of day.” They knew that meant ask the question, do the assigned task, and then come back and ask it again. It was great to hear that question asked by our volunteers at the Art Fair. Maybe that should have been my theme for the year.
Now, we all have another chance to help. Tuesday, September 19th, 1:00 – 3:00 at the SHARC is our September Welcome Event. You can help make this event a success by inviting a woman you know who isn’t part of SRWC to attend with you to learn about our wonderful social and charitable activities. You can help by volunteering to help with set-up or take down (contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer). You can help by signing up to help with an event at one of the activities tables so that you’re already on the books to show your “heart” during the upcoming year.

SRWC Programs & Luncheon
Tuesday September 19th, 1-3:00: our Annual Welcome Event at the SHARC. This event begins our annual membership drive for 2017-18. Come learn about our activities, friendship and opportunities while you enjoy a snack. Applications and activity sign-up sheets will be available. Active memberships are $25 and an Associate membership is $35.
The 8th Annual Sunriver Art Fair once again filled the Village at Sunriver with great art and entertainment this August and from all accounts it went well. We are expecting to exceed last year’s revenue and hope to continue to earn as Art Fair merchandise is sold at other venues. There are still lots of T-shirts, posters and wine glasses if you missed them, look for them at the Welcome Event. We need to thank all the generous sponsors who made this event possible. We can’t list them all in this limited space but they are all recognized on our website at sunriverartfair.com, and we urge everyone to patronize and thank our sponsors for their valued support. Without them there would be no Sunriver Art Fair.
A special thank you also to the many volunteers who took time from busy summer schedules to work at the Fair. And especially my Cabinet who began last October to plan and produce this event: Assistant Director and Sponsor Co-Chair, Kathleen Meyer, and Sponsor Co-Chair Star Moore. These ladies did an amazing job and left no stone unturned. Lee Haroun did her usual smooth and charming job as Artist Liaison. Laurel Brennan took on Publicity for the first time this year, and faced with a new supplier, produced striking ads and publications. These ladies also provided strong guidance and support as my Executive Team. Laura Dickinson continued to hone the website, making it better all the time and Sue Glines brought us into the 21st Century as we dipped our toe into social media, the preferred news source of younger generations. The Fair weekend was managed ably by veteran Sheila Schmerber, who makes setting up that huge event look easy. As she has in past years, Gina Rosbrook brought in a terrific line up of musicians on a slim budget. Magic! And Bonnie Mankoff kept her string of culinary successes going with outstanding artist hospitality. The artists all mentioned it in their surveys. The Volunteer Center was efficiently managed by Nancy Foote who directed over 120 volunteers from SRWC who had been recruited by Nancy Capell and Ruby Price. Debbie Dunham and her family, jumped in to run a very popular Kids Art Center, and coordinated the Information Booths. Mary Bartholomey and Chris Bigham created beautiful and valuable gift baskets. And of course, our SRWC Treasurers Lorna Nolte and Cindy McCabe kept us on track financially. And finally, a tip of the hat to Marcia Shoenlau who found hosts for so many of our artists.
So a HUGE thank you to all of you, however you served. Without you this event does not happen. This is my last year as Director and as I turn the responsibility over to a very able 2018 Director, Kathleen Meyer, I hope I left the Fair a bit better. I know I have benefited immeasurably from the friendships formed and the memories of all the fun we’ve had. I will be here in 2018 to support Kathleen as mentor and in any other way I can. September Birthday Lunch
If your birthday is in September, you will be contacted for this month’s celebration.
You are invited to a8end the organizational social for this year’s Sunriver Women’s Dinner Club. The Dinner Club is for people who enjoy sharing a meal and socializing with new and old friends. We meet in member’s homes three times a year to share a themed potluck dinner. At the end of the year we meet again as a group to re-acquaint. This can be an opportunity to be adventurous with new cuisines or gourmet ingredients or not. If this appeals to you, please consider joining in the fun. Singles are welcome to bring a guest.
Hostesses, who provide the entree, are needed. Let us know how many you can comfortably seat at your table and we’ll provide the names of your guests. Some hostesses have organized a progressive dinner where part of the meal is at one home and another part at a nearby home. There are many possibilities. Dinners are BYOB or beverage of your choice unless notified differently.

**ALERT!! CHANGE IN HIKE DUE TO WILD FIRES!!**
September 13: We will now be hiking around Paulina Lake. It is a 7.5 mile loop with a 300 foot elevation gain. The trail skirts the Inter Lake Obsidian Flow and has views of Paulina Peak. After the hike, we will eat lunch at Paulina Lodge. Please bring water, snack, sunscreen, hiking poles, soap for Care and Share, $3 for driver and your senior pass. Meet at HTCC at 7:30. Or as an alternative, you can drive up 97 towards Paulina; turn left at the brown sign that says Paulina Lake Rd/Newberry Crater Rd and left again at the parking lot across the road from the RV Park. Meet there at 8:00. The HTCC group will meet you there.

Soft Soles is a Hiking Group who travel to Central Oregon destinations, we hike trails rated easy of 3-6 miles. All Hikes meet at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 9 a.m. to carpool. Remember to bring all your suggested hiking supplies; water, sunscreen, bug spray, poles, binoculars, camera, forest pass, snacks, hat. And, note- no dogs. Please also bring soap for Care & Share and $$ for the Driver.
Soft Soles “Walking in Circles” is a group of walkers who meet every Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the North Pool, walking exclusively the Sunriver bike paths.
Thursday September 7: Fall River, easy 5.6 miles.
Tuesday September 12: Squaw Creek Falls, 2 miles with lunch in Sisters.
Wednesday September 20: Lava Island Rapids to Big Eddy Rapids, 4.4 miles.
Monday September 25: Paulina Lake to Warm Springs, 2.5 miles with lunch in LaPine.

“The Reindeer Romp,” will be held on December 11 at the Sunriver Resort Great Hall. This elegant and fun-filled evening is our second largest fund-raiser of the year! The new Philanthropy Committee will be participating in a review and training session in early October. The 2017 Grant Awardees will be revisited by committee members, the grant process will be reviewed, and the 2018 grant application will be edited for website submission. We anticipate another great year of support for our non-profit organizations. Remember that you can contribute directly to the SRWC Philanthropy effort when you renew your annual membership!
