If you’ve been reading the monthly newsletters or the article in the Sunriver Scene, you’ve heard me state and restate my theme, Jump on in! If you’ve been thinking you’re ready to jump in and become more involved, we have an opportunity for you!
The SRWC Dinner Club is in need of a co-organizer. Ruth Kinane stepped up (or jumped in) to lead the Dinner Club when Marcia Schonlau and Carol Cassetty stepped down. Marcia has graciously continued to help Ruth, but it’s time to fill this position more permanently. Since Ruth is a newer member, it would be great to have a co-leader who has been around the club awhile; but we’re willing to work with anyone who is ready to step-up their involvement.
We’re also looking for new fundraising ideas and leaders for those ideas. I’ve asked before, but I’ll ask again, do you have a great idea? Maybe you’re a runner or a walker and you’d like to organize a 5k. Maybe you love Bingo or other games and want to set-up a game night. Maybe you’re a garage sale aficionado and you’d like to organize a sale to benefit SRWC. Maybe… Jump on in and let us know.
It’s time to get your 2017-2018 membership form in! The new Membership Directories will go to press on October 10th, so don’t miss that deadline if you want to be listed! The directories will be available at the luncheon on October 17th and at each luncheon during the year. SRWC is open to all women in Sunriver and the surrounding communities. SRWC Programs & Luncheon
This year’s luncheon programs will follow a theme of honoring women in our community. Luncheons are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month for October, November, and January through May.
October 17: Our luncheon will be held at Crosswater Grille at 11:30, $20 (cash or check only).
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in honor of the women who have battled, or are still fighting this disease, October’s program will feature Lauren Olander of the American Cancer Society and breast cancer survivor, Tracie Hannick, from Project Hope. There really is humor in mammograms! The speakers will be followed by the much-anticipated announcement of the “Breast Dressed Bra Decorating Contest” winners. (See article below for contest details.)

This summer, the Program Committee reviewed SRWC member comments regarding luncheon locations. The following questions were taken into consideration:
- Does the lunch cost per person compare favorably with one venue or another? The Grille at Crosswater is less expensive than other restaurants in the Sunriver area which can accommodate our group size.
- Is the meeting room large enough to provide a comfortable experience for those attending? The dining room and adjoining gathering spaces are roomy and relaxed. In addition, audiovisual equipment is easily accessed for guest speakers.
- Are menu preferences considered? The Grille’s chef offers us delicious menus. In order to keep the cost low, the same set menu is purchased for the Sunriver Men’s Group. In August, the SRWC program committee meets with Crosswater regarding member’s particular lunch entrée requests. The chef then creates luncheon choices that accommodate both clubs’ preferences.
- Is the luncheon experience positive for participants? The Crosswater staff is professional and incredibly friendly. It is important to them that we always have a positive experience.
The Program Committee also received individual requests from SRWC members regarding luncheon speakers which we incorporated into our theme of “Women Honoring Women”. Thank you!

“Breast Dressed” Bra Contest
Breast Dressed” Bra contest —Raising Eyebrows to Raise Awareness
Melon Molder, Rack Pack, Hooter Harness, Flopper Stopper, Over-the-Shoulder-Boulder-Holder…. Call it what you like — most women will tell you life is more uplifting with their brassiere. Some are padded to accentuate décolletage, others lacy, pointed, demure or sexy. For older women, and those more endowed, they are a line of defense against the injustice of gravity. This once pragmatic foundation, which has become a symbol of feminine beauty, can be both a delight and a necessity. For many breast cancer survivors, it is a hallmark of victory.
To pay homage to “the girls”, we are not burning bras; we’re decorating them! That’s right, we’re conducting a “Breast Dressed Bra Decorating Contest”! We’re poking a little fun at this dreadful disease and adding a little levity and “uplifting support” to our October luncheon program about Breast Cancer Awareness.
- Must use a padded 36 B or C bra
- Entries should be original
- Entries do NOT have to be wearable
- Each entry should have a title
- To protect your entry, please deliver in a box
- Entry may be designated “in honor of” or “in memory of” someone
- Contest is open to SRWC members
- Entries can be submitted by an individual or team-
- Winning bras are awarded one prize (teams are responsible for sharing)
Entries will be accepted at Sage Springs Spa from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Friday, October 13th. The DEADLINE to enter is 5:00 pm. Early entries will be accepted beginning October 1st and special prizes will be awarded to early entries! Just because you may be gone later in October, there is no reason you can’t participate. Prize packages will be awarded for first, second and third places (as determined by our esteemed judges.) There will also be a “People’s Choice Award” based on votes cast by the general public.
Decorated bras will be displayed at Sage Springs from 6pm Friday, October 13th through 5pm Monday, October 16th for viewing and “People Choice” voting. Winners will be announced at the Women’s Club October Breast Cancer Awareness luncheon, Tuesday, October 17th.
This is an awareness-raiser, NOT a fundraiser; we are NOT asking for a donation to this Campaign. However, if you want to donate your entry to the American Cancer Society, after the contest, they are organizing another display in Bend that will include a fundraiser.

Sunriver Art Fair – #1 Small Town Art Fair
The 2017 Sunriver Art Fair was a success, by all measures, and planning for 2018 is already underway!
We had a record of 222 artists apply for the 74 booths in this year’s show. The artists selected by the jury this year offered high praise for the Sunriver Women’s Club, the overall event organization, the venue, and how well we take care of our artists. Best of all, we netted over $27,000 to support our philanthropy efforts. And, yes, it is already time to start planning for the 2018 Fair, on August 10, 11 and 12. Add those dates to your calendars now, and plan to be there with us.
It takes over 120 volunteers to make the Art Fair a success. We were fortunate to have an outstanding team working together to produce the show this year, and we’re looking for volunteers to help us plan and execute the 2018 Art Fair. There is room for everyone to help, so “Jump on In”! We’re building teams for Artist Support, Publicity and Marketing, Art Fair Website, Social Media, Sponsorship, Grants, Sales and Info, Artists Reception, Entertainment, Kids’ Center, Raffle Baskets, Logistics, Volunteer Coordinators, Artist Hospitality and Artist Housing.
Please consider joining us this year, even if you are not fulltime in central Oregon. It is a great way to meet people, build life-long friendships and make a positive impact on our philanthropy goals. If you have any questions, send them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
HELP WANTED: Immediate opening for an organized, fun person who has good email and communication skills to head-up our Sponsorship Team. No experience required! It’s a fun job reaching out to our extensive list of wonderful past sponsors via email to verify their support and participation in our 2018 Fair. Star Moore, the 2017 co-chair, has left this job so organized, you can easily follow her lead. This activity starts in November so the need is URGENT. Ideally two people can work together on Sponsorship, so call your BFFs and invite them to join you in this fun and very important role. Most of the work on Sponsorship is done BEFORE SUMMER, leaving you plenty of time to travel and welcome your summertime visitors without other commitments. The organizational meeting at Debbie and Brian Dunham’s home was well attended with enthusiastic participation and beautiful weather. Dinner themes were chosen: Hawaiian for October/November, Irish for January/February and there’s a special plan for Singapore Street Food for March/April. We’re looking forward to a great Dinner Club season.

October 3: Join us for a bike ride through Sunriver! Meet at 10 a.m. at the Woodlands Golf Course parking lot. We will ride for a few hours and return to the McDivot’s Cafe (at the Woodlands golf course) for lunch. Bring your bike, water, money for lunch and soap for Care and Share. Helmets are strongly recommended. Leaders are Patty Klascius and Carolyn Spaniol.
October 5: Hike up Lava Butte to watch the sunset and the moon rise. Meet at the HTCC at 5:15 to carpool to the Lava Butte parking area (forest passes needed). Distance: 1.75 miles each way, Elevation gain: 500 feet.
We’ll walk up the paved road that curves around the cone, very easy surface to walk on.
BRING: Water, a snack, soap for Care and Share and FLASHLIGHTS FOR THE WALK BACK DOWN. This hike is open to everyone – husbands, significant others, etc. RSVP to Debbie Dunham at email@example.com
Soft Soles is a hiking group that travels to Central Oregon destinations and hikes trails rated easy at 3-6 miles. We accommodate for the pace of the slower hikers to enjoy the wonder of it all.
All hikes meet at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 9 a.m. to carpool. Bring your hiking supplies; water, hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, poles, binoculars, camera, snack, forest pass. Bring soap for our participation in Care & Share. No dogs permitted.

Monday October 2: Dry River Gorge, an easy 6 mile hike with lunch at Worthy Brewing.
Tuesday October 10: Sheep’s Bridge, a non-hike event. This special outing organized by Barb Wymetalek and Kathy Burroughs, is to view the bald eagles, osprey, warblers and flycatchers as they fish for the spawning kokanee. Bring lunch, something to drink, binoculars and a folding chair to make yourself comfortable as we enjoy the action and conversation. Meet at HTCC at 10:30 to carpool.
Wednesday October 18: Smith Rock, an easy 3.2 mile hike with lunch at Thai Orchid.
Thursday October 26: Badlands, easy 5.6 mile hike with lunch after TBD.
“The Reindeer Romp,” will be held on December 11 at the Sunriver Resort Great Hall. This elegant and fun-filled evening is our second largest fund-raiser of the year! “The Bad Cats” will provide the dance music for the Gala. Coats for Kids
I am certain we can all remember the piles and piles of snow last winter on our roofs, driveways and everywhere. As the temperatures drop please think about the children in Deschutes County who do not have winter clothing to wear to school or to wear to play in the snow. We are gearing up to change that! Starting at the October luncheon we will be collecting winter coats, snow pants, hats, gloves, scarfs and snow boots for the children in need at Rosland Elementary School in La Pine.
No time to shop – No problem! You can make a monetary contribution at the luncheon. I can then use the money to shop for specific winter items the school coordinator requests. Make checks payable to SRWC with a notation for “Coats for Kids.” Remember all donations are tax deductible. Philanthropy….Back to School Support
School is in full swing with a little help from the Sunriver Women’s Club. Early this fall the Assistance League of Bend took over 250 children from Sunriver and La Pine schools shopping at Walmart to select school clothes—underwear, socks, jeans, shirts and coats. A grant from the SRWC to the program funded clothes for 40 of those children.
For the second year, La Pine Parks and Recreation is running the after school program at Three Rivers School. Over 30 students participate in arts, crafts, science projects, cultural activities and games. The program is expanding to middle schoolers with the help of a SRWC grant that provides basic supplies.
And, another South Deschutes County high school graduate will continue their education due to a scholarship from the Sunriver Christian Fellowship Partners in Education Program. The SRWC provided a portion of the funds for the scholarship.
